The fact is that we feel stronger than before. For three days we listened and talked to some of the most important specialists in climate change in the UK and perhaps in the world. It is really important to be optimistic and believe that by working together we can change the earth's future (and this isn't only a "cliché"!).

Together everything is possible! During the summit we understood that despite our many different ways of life, all of us live in the same world. During the three days, students from many countries around the world listened together to specialists, talked with them, discussed and created the summit's resolutions. Why can't adults follow our example? Why can't politicians sit around the same table and break all the frontiers so that we can actually face and solve the inconvenient truth?

But in the future we will be the adults, and perhaps assume political roles, and we'll make the difference, it's a promise!

Due to our work around environmental issues, being at the summit was a kind of gift, but at the same time it was "just" one more activity related to our project. On the other hand, the summit gave us more, better and efficient ideas, which means that now we must undertake the responsibility to share them at school and with other schools in Portugal as well.

How lucky we were to achieve all this in a most interesting country, together with such nice people, making possible the beginning of beautiful friendships.

Joana Magalhães da Silva

Our day

We ended the third day signing notebooks and giving souvenirs…
“You’ll be friends for life”: the summit’s most noteworthy sentence.

Greening Cities - The delegate’s day

Key note speaker:

I had never viewed the environmental education project of my school as my passport to a three day conference on climate changes in London. Although I’ve been working on many projects for five years, this is the most important event where I represented my school and my country. This invitation is recognizing our work. I accepted this challenge as I accepted to tackle climate changes.

1st Speaker: Global problem

The main idea we got was the problem’s global dimension. The effects are all around the world: in our countries, our families, ourselves. We must forget our differences and tackle together! That’s one of the reasons why we created strong friendship between us, and why all the delegates really enjoyed music, the global language.

2nd Speaker: Individuals work

Many suggestions to, individually, improve our planet: advice our neighbors distributing information on the mail boxes; clarify the problem to our younger colleagues are only examples. Our role, as delegates of this summit, is to transmit to families and friends the information we got and start working now! How many people we educate? What can billions of educated people do?

3rd Speaker: The schools’ work

A behavior change is urgent to tackle effectively climate changes. Schools are the places where we can educate more people in a shorter time. Children receive the information more efficiently and by educating children we are educating their families. We must tell them that it’s still possible to maintain our life conditions. That’s what my school is doing since the eighties. We entered the eco-schools project in 2003 and we received annually the maximum prize: the green flag.

Panel Debate conclusions:

After debating the delegates concluded: Our countries must do much more; this was a fantastic and unique opportunity to learn.
We understood clearly that we’ll really be “friends for life” tackling together to have a better world.

Vote question:

Yes or No:

Those three days were the most fantastic we lived.

Dongtan, a primeira Eco-Cidade do mundo.

Desta vez fomos à nova atracção: a Antártida.

Greening Cities – International Student Summit, Day 2 – 11th July 2007

O segundo orador do dia foi o Dr Mark Spencer, Curator of the British and European Herbariums at the Natural History Museum.

A terceira comunicação do dia esteve a cargo do Dr Tim Sparks, Environmental Scientist Natural Earth Resources Council Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, Monks wood. O tema desta comunicação foi “Dear Diary: how everyone can contribute to monitoring the effects of climate change?”

À tarde a primeira oradora era Samantha Heath, Director of Sustainability Exchange.

Greening Cities – International Student Summit, Day 1 – 10th July 2007

O primeiro a subir ao palco foi Tom Burke, Founder Director of E3G; Senior Business Advisor to UK Climate Change Ambassador at FCO; Environmental Advisor to Rio Tinto plc.

A Tom Burke, difícil de igualar, seguiu-se o professor Mike Hume, Founding Director of Tyndall Centre for Climate Change.

O terceiro orador, e último da primeira parte, foi o Dr Jeremy Leggett, Chief Executive and Chairman of Solarcentury, Chairman of SolarAid.

Aguardava-nos a Dr Jillian Anable, Research Fellow, The Centre for Transport Policy.

Seguiu-se o Dr. Dave Reay da School of Geosciences, University of Edinburgh.

O balanço final do dia é, obviamente, positivo.

Greening Cities – International Student Summit, Arrival

These elements have been designed to be the core of the Eco-Schools process, yet the structure is flexible enough to be adopted in any country, and at any level of schools’ previous environmental achievement. Pupil involvement throughout the process is an integral and essential factor. The participation of other stakeholders in the school and community in the decision-making process is an important step towards dialogue and cooperation, providing a good basis for citizenship education. This flexible system, with its pedagogic and practical elements, has made Eco-Schools a very successful programme with clear and tangible benefits to schools and communities, and of course to teachers and young people.

in http://www.eco-schools.org

CO2 offset project

The Eco-Schools International Coordination has teamed up with Climate Care, an organisation which permits individuals and organisations to reduce their own impact on global warming. The money is invested in projects such as renewable energy and reforestation which either reduce emissions at source or absorb CO2 from the atmosphere. This is called a carbon offset.

in http://www.eco-schools.org/projects/cchange/co2.htm

Greening Cities 2007
